Now, that the 2023 Emmy Awards has been pushed back to January 15, 2024 due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, it’s given ample time to talk to some of the folks who were nominated.
Among the Black talent nominated for an Emmy Award this year is Stephanie Filo, who made history on three different accounts with her recent Emmy nominations.
First editor to be nominated in a single year 3 times for 3 different shows
First Black editor to be nominated 3 times in a single year
First Black female editor to be nominated 3 times in a single year
Stephanie is nominated for Outstanding Picture Editing For Variety Programming for her work on Hulu’s History of the World, Part II ("III") along with George Mandl, Daniel Flesher and Angel Gamboa Bryant; for Outstanding Picture Editing For A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie for her work on Netflix’s Dahmer ("The Good Boy Box"), and for Outstanding Picture Editing For Variety Programming with her work on HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show ("My Love Language Is Words Of Defamation") along with Malinda Zehner Guerra and Taylor Joy Mason.
She previously made history twice with prior Emmy Award wins.
In 2022, Stephanie stood alongside her colleagues Bradinn French, Taylor Mason, and Robyn Wilson, as they became the first all-Black editing team to be awarded an Emmy for their work on A Black Lady Sketch Show. A year prior, she was awarded for her editorial contributions alongside Daysha Broadway and Jessica Hernández, making them the first all women of color editing team to win an Emmy for their work on the series.
Her next project is the upcoming TIFF selected film We Grown Now, directed by Minhal Baig and executive produced by Joe Pirro, James Schamus, Jurnee Smollett, and Anikah McLaren.
