Exclusive: Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Jane Adams talk HBO's The Idol and working with Lily-Rose Depp & Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye
Premiering June 4 on HBO and available to stream on Max is the HBO Original drama series The Idol, co-created by Sam Levinson (HBO’s “Euphoria”), Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, and stars Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp. The series premiered at the 76th annual Cannes Film Festival on May 22.
After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?
The cast includes Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Lily-Rose Depp, Troye Sivan. Also starring Dan Levy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Ramsey, Suzanna Son, and Hank Azaria.
Da'Vine Joy Randolph plays Destiny, Jocelyn's co-manager and one of her confidantes. Randolph is best known for her role opposite Eddie Murphy in Dolemite is My Name and has since starred and been featured in films and TV projects including High Fidelity the series, Lee Daniels’ The United States vs. Billie Holiday, The Lost City, and more recently Sanaa Lathan’s On The Come Up. She also recurred on Only Murders in the Building as Detective Williams. On stage, she played Oda Mae Brown in the Broadway production of Ghost: The Musical, which garnered her a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance. She will next be seen opposite Colman Domingo in George C. Wolfe’s Rustin and in Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers opposite Paul Giamatti.
Jane Adams plays Nikki Katz, a record label executive. With a boatload of film and TV credits, her most recent projects include the Max series Hacks, where she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. She also appeared on Sneaky Pete, Claws and Twin Peaks. Notable projects also include the series Hung, where was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film, and Frasier, where she recurred as Dr. Mel Karnofsky.
