Exclusive: Director Angel Manuel Soto on bringing Mexican culture to DC superhero film Blue Beetle
Hitting theaters on August 18 from Warner Bros. is the DC comic book film Blue Beetle, directed by Angel Manuel Soto and starring Xolo Maridueña, Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Trujillo, & Susan Sarandon.
Recent college graduate Jaime Reyes (played by Xolo Maridueña) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his true purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.
Written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the film is based on the DC Comics character created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, & Cully Hamner. It's produced by Peter Safran and John Rickard; made by DC Studios, eOne, S&K Pictures, and the Safran Company.
Angel previously directed the Award Winning Sundance 2020 darling “Charm City Kings,” and documentary “Menudo: Forever Young.”
