Exclusive: Director Aphton Corbin talks new Pixar SparkShorts film Twenty Something

Currently playing on Disney+ is director Aphton Corbin’s animated short film Twenty Something, which is part of the SparkShorts program that is designed to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows.

Twenty Something follows a twenty-one year old girl going to the club on her birthday with her best friend. As she proceeds to go to the restroom, we realize that this is no adult, but three young sisters all under the age of sixteen who have disguised themselves as an adult. Hijinks ensue as the three sisters try to keep their cover and have the night of their life.

For Aphton Corbin, this represents her directorial debut. She began her career at Pixar Animation Studios in 2016 as a story artist on Toy Story 4 (2019) and recently worked as a story artist on the Oscar winning feature film Soul (2020). As a story artist, Corbin helps the Director visualize their film in storyboard form. The artists provide the first representation of the movie to determine if the story elements are working well. Raised in Richmond and Sacramento, CA, Corbin attended Pleasant Grove High School and graduated from California Institute of the Arts. She currently resides in Berkeley, CA.

BlackFilmandTV.com’s Wilson Morales caught up with Corbin as she spoke about her directorial debut and how the story is universal to many.
