Exclusive: Grantham Coleman on his roles in Power Book III: Raising Kanan and Lawmen: Bass Reeves

One of the hottest actors working right now is Grantham Coleman, who currently has roles in Starz’s Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 3, Paramount Plus’ Lawmen: Bass Reeves and in Netflix’s Rustin.

On Raising Kanan, Coleman plays Ronnie Mathis, Unique’solder brother who was ,recently released from prison. Ronnie’ stoic demeanor belies a shocking ruthlessness. It’s not that Ronnie’s immoral, it’s that he’s amoral. Conscienceless. Unyielding. Vindictive

On Bass Reeves, he’s Edwin Jones, an extremely persuasive man who has a clear vision and a promise for the future, to those who will listen. 

In Rustin, he plays Blyden, who screenwriter describes as a young member of the civil rights movement who doesn’t see eye to eye with Rustin, but then recognizes him as a leader.

The Houston native, Juliard grad is mostly known for his stage work where he played Macduff opposite Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga in Sam Gold’s Macbeth. Other stage credits include The Great Society, Hamlet at the Old Globe; The Tempest at Walt Disney Concert Hall; Much Ado About Nothing during the 2019 season of Shakespeare in the Park; We Are Proud To Present… at SoHo Rep Theatre; Moonlight Oscar winner Tarrell Alvin McCraney’s Choir Boy at Manhattan Theatre Club; and Rattlestick Playwrights Theater’s One-Night opposite Rutina Wesley.

On the film side, he appeared in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Bardo, the acclaimed Sundance pic Black Bear with Aubrey Plaza, and opposite Kristen Stewart in Seberg, where he played Black Panther Party co-founder Bobby Seale.
