Exclusive: Gugu Mbatha Raw on playing TVA's Judge Ravonna Renslayer in Loki series
Now playing on Disney+ is Marvel Studios’ “Loki,” in which Tom Hiddleston reprises his role from all three “Thor” films, 2012’s “The Avengers,” and 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War.” Hiddleston last portrayed the God of Mischief in last year’s highest-grossing film of all time “Avengers: Endgame,” where he successfully had stolen the Tesseract during Iron Man and Ant Man’s failed attempt to retrieve it.
Marvel Studios’ “Loki” features the God of Mischief as he steps out of his brother’s shadow in a new series that takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” It’s the franchise’s third television show on Disney’s streaming service following WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Tom Hiddleston returns as the title character, joined by Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Wunmi Mosaku and Richard E. Grant. Kate Herron directs “Loki,” and Michael Waldron is head writer.
Last seen in 2020’s Come Away, Misbehaviour, and Summerland films, this is Mbatha-Raw’s first entry into the Marvel world and first series gig since she did Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and Apple TV+’s The Morning Show in 2019. In playing Judge Ravonna Renslayer, she believes this character is an origin in that she may not be what the comics have already written about her.
In the comics, Ravonna Renslayer has a romantic history with Kang the Conqueror – the villain of the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, who is set to be portrayed by Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country)
In speaking with BlackFilmandTV.com’s Wilson Morales, she goes into her character and getting in the MCU world.
