Exclusive: Head Writer Malcolm Spellman talks The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Premiering on Disney+ March 19 is Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” featuring fan-favorites Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan as Falcon and Winter Soldier, whose oil-and-water dynamic has entertained audiences since 2016’s “Avengers: Civil War.”
All eyes are on the shield, as Sam Wilson aka The Falcon, and Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier decide to team up—or rather, work together—when a new global threat launches them into an unexpected mission that may hit too close to home.
Directed by Kari Skogland with Malcolm Spellman serving as head writer, the six-episode series also stars Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Adepero Oduye as Sarah Wilson and Daniel Brühl as Zemo.
For Head Writer Malcolm Spellman, this is a dream come true. A avid comic book fan, when the opportunity came for writers to be a part of this series, Spellman teamed with Nate Moore, VP of Production and Development at Marvel Studios, on his pitch for the job. When the initial meeting with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige didn’t go so, Moore fought and believed in Spellman that another chance came up and he delivered.
Prior to this, Spellman served as an executive producer and writer for Fox’s Empire. He currently serves as the executive producer to FX’s Hip Hop Uncovered, a six-part docuseries that explores the untold story of how America’s streets influenced hip hop culture. He will also be the EP to Season 2 of the Apple TV crime drama Truth Be Told.
BlackFilmandTV.com’s Wilson Morales recently spoke with Spellman on getting the opportunity to be a part of the Marvel universe in writing this series.
