Exclusive: Jharrel Jerome, Lorraine Toussaint, and Cliff "Method Man" Smith talk Concrete Cowboy
Hitting Netflix on April 2 is Ricky Staub’s feature directorial debut Concrete Cowboy starring Idris Elba and Stranger Things breakout Caleb McLaughlin. Also featured in the film are Lorraine Toussaint, Clifford "Method Man" Smith, Jharrel Jerome, and Bryon Bowers.
Idris Elba and breakout newcomer Caleb McLaughlin star in this moving father-son drama set amongst the vibrant North Philadelphia urban cowboy subculture, which flourishes despite the surrounding poverty, violence and encroaching gentrification.
Inspired by the real-life Fletcher Street Stables-a black urban horsemanship community which has provided a safe haven for the neighborhood for more than 100 years-and by the novel Ghetto Cowboy by Greg Neri, CONCRETE COWBOY follows 15 year-old Cole (McLaughlin) who is taken to live with his estranged father Harp (Idris Elba) in North Philadelphia. Torn between his growing respect for his father's community at the stables and his reemerging friendship with his troubled cousin (Jharrel Jerome, Moonlight, When They See Us), Cole begins to reprioritize his life as the stables themselves are threatened by encroaching gentrification.
Produced by Elba and Philadelphia native Lee Daniels, first-time director Ricky Staub made this loving tribute to his neighborhood along with the community members of the Fletcher Street Stables who are featured throughout the film.
BlackFilmandTV.com recently spoke with Jharrel Jerome, Lorraine Toussaint, and Cliff "Method Man" on their research on Black cowboys and also how this film is also about love within a community.
