Exclusive: Marisa Abela and director Sam Taylor-Johnson talk Amy Winehouse film Back to Black

Hitting theaters on May 17 is Back To Black, the Amy Winehouse biopic featuring English actress Marisa Abela as the famed Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Written by Matt Greenhalgh, the cast also includes Jack O'Connell, Eddie Marsan and Lesley Manville.

The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black that catapulted Winehouse to global fame. Told through Amy’s eyes and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film explores and embraces the many layers of the iconic artist and the tumultuous love story at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time.

Abela is best known for her role in the hit HBO-BBC Two banking drama Industry, with the series being renewed for a third season. Coming up is the IFC Films and AMC+ espionage thriller Rogue Agent, alongside James Norton and Gemma Arterton. Abela previously starred in the She Is Love, the improvisational romance from writer and director Jamie Adams, opposite Haley Bennett and Sam Riley.

Taylor-Johnson directed the 2015 blockbuster Fifty Shades of Grey starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. Her additional credits include the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy and A Million Little Piecesboth starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
