Exclusive: Renée Elise Goldsberry and Sara Bareilles talk Peacock's Girls5eva Season 2

Now playing on Peacock is Season 2 of its acclaimed comedy series Girls5eva, starring Grammy Award-winner and Tony and Emmy Award-nominated singer Sara Bareilles, Grammy and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Renée Elise Goldsberry, Emmy winning “Saturday Night Live” mainstay and comedy icon Paula Pell, and New York Times Best-Selling author, actor, activist, writer and host Busy Philipps.

When a one-hit-wonder girl group from the 90’s gets sampled by a young rapper, its members reunite to give their pop star dreams one more shot. They may be grown women balancing spouses, kids, jobs, debt, aging parents, and shoulder pain, but can‘t they also be Girls5eva?

Goldsberry plays Wickie, the glamorous, big-voiced, star of the group back in the day. Wickie’s solo career hit a ditch, but she’s determined to use this new opportunity to retake her rightful place as pop royalty.

Goldsberry is best known for her role as Angelica Schuyler in the musical phenomenon Hamilton, a performance that earned her a Tony Award, Grammy Award, Drama Desk Award, and Lucille Lortel Award.

Bareilles plays Dawn, former member of the short-lived 90s girl group Girls5eva, who is now a bit restless in life managing her family’s small Italian restaurant in Queens. When the opportunity arises, Dawn reluctantly gets the band back together for a Girls5eva reunion and it might just be exactly what she needed.

She’s a Grammy Award winner, received seven Grammy nominations, two Tony nominations and three Emmy nominations. She composed the music and lyrics for Broadway’s Waitress, and made her Broadway acting debut in 2017 by stepping into the show’s lead role. She served as executive producer with JJ Abrams and Jessie Nelson for Little Voice, a 10-episode musical dramedy series for Apple, for which she created the original music.

Blackfilmandtv.com’s Wilson Morales spoke with Goldsberry and Bareilles on what to expect in Season 2.
