Exclusive: Showrunner Sascha Penn talks about the deaths in Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 2 Finale
Recently, Starz aired the finale to Season 2 of its hit series Power Book III: Raising Kanan, where there a lot of changes and deaths leading to Season 3.
Set in the early 1990’s, the third series in the “Power” Universe tells the origin story of fan favorite character, “Kanan Stark,” and follows his coming of age in South Jamaica, Queens. Raised by a single mother, who ruthlessly runs the family’s emerging criminal empire, Kanan charts out a path through some of the city’s most volatile streets while, at the same time, navigating his way through adolescence, which has its own dangers and pitfalls.
“Raising Kanan” stars MeKai Curtis in the titular role of “Kanan” and Tony® Awards winner Patina Miller as his mother, Raquel “Raq” Thomas.
Episode 8 (“IF Y’DON’T KNOW, NOW Y’KNOW”) was directed by Rob Hardy and written by its showrunner Sascha Penn & Naja Rayne. Kanan strays further from his mother and sets up shop on the corners of South Jamaica. Raq worries about retaliation. Lou’s rift with Raq grows.
There were more than the average deaths in this powerful episode, with a lot of the actors who had guest and recurring roles were killed, including the crackhead Sam that Marvin paid to leave town, Jukebox’s mom Kenya (played by LeToya Luckett), Unique’s right hand Worrell (played by John Clay III ), one of Marvin’s helpers Born Ready and Lou-Lou’s up and coming artist Zisa (played by Paulina Singer)
