Exclusive: Teresa Palmer and Miranda Otto talk The Clearing and working with her sister Grace Otto

Now playing on Hulu is the eight-part psychological thriller series The Clearing, which is based on the best-selling crime thriller ‘In The Clearing’ by author J.P. Pomare and inspired by the darkness of real-life cults in Australia and around the world.

Teresa Palmer, Miranda Otto and Guy Pearce lead a stellar line-up of Australian talent including Hazem Shammas, Mark Coles-Smith, Kate Mulvany and Julia Savage.

When a local girl goes missing, it triggers a woman’s memories from her childhood as a member of The Kindred — one of the few female-led cults in history. This exclusive original series follows the nightmares of a cult survivor who’s forced to face the demons from her past in order to stop the kidnapping and coercion of innocent children in the future. The Clearing is an emotional and psychological thriller that burrows under the skin and inside the mind, blurring the lines between past and present, reality and nightmare.

“The Clearing” is directed by Jeffrey Walker ("Young Rock," "Lambs of God") and Gracie Otto ("Seriously Red," "Bump," "Deadloch").

Palmer plays Freya, the lead character in The Clearing. She is forced to confront the trauma of her past upon finding out a little girl in her town has gone missing. She has a son Billy, who she struggles with being a little overbearing in the first two episodes as a direct result of her childhood.

Otto plays Adrienne Beaufort / Maitreya, who is in charge of the cult members and convinces Freya (who went by May in her early years) to keep everyone in check. As Adrienne seems to be suffering from dementia later in life, she stills finds a way to get to Freya’s state of mind.

Blackfilmandtv.com’s Wilson Morales spoke with Palmer and Otto on their involvement in the series and Miranda working with her sister Grace, who co-created the series.
