Exclusive: Warfare cast interviews

Hitting theaters on April 11 from A24 is Alex Garland’s Warfare, which embeds audiences with a platoon of American Navy SEALs on a surveillance mission gone wrong in insurgent territory. A visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare and brotherhood, told like never before: in real time and based on the memory of the people who lived it.

The film was produced by Andrew Macdonald, Matthew Penry-Davey, Allon Reich, and Peter Rice.

Co-written and co-directed by filmmakers Alex Garland & Ray Mendoza, the cast includes D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henrique Zaga, Michael Gandolfini, with Joesph Quinn and Charles Melton.

Based on ex-Navy Seal Ray Mendoza's real-life experiences as a soldier during the Iraq War. Mendoza joined the Navy in 1997 and served for over 16 years as a Member of SEAL Team 5 and a Land Warfare Training Detachment and BUD/s instructor. He was awarded a Silver Star 'for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Lead Communicator, Naval Special Warfare Task Unit-Ramadi, in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on November 19, 2006.

Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai was cast in the crucial role of communications officer Ray Mendoza. Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) was cast in the role of Sam, based on Joe Hildebrand, who was also gravely injured during evacuation. Shōgun’s Cosmo Jarvis was cast in the central role of Elliott Miller, Head sniper and medic for Op 1. Will Poulter (Midsommar) plays Captain Eric, the Officer in Charge of the first operation; Kit Connor (Heartstopper) is the gunner Tommy. Charles Melton, who played Reggie Mantle on six seasons of Riverdale before launching a successful film career in Todd Haynes’ May December, was cast as Officer in Charge Jake Wayne of the second Ramadi operation.
