Now playing in theaters and hitting Netflix May 21, 2021 is Zack Snyder’s ensemble zombie heist pic, Army of the Dead, starring Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Garret Dillahunt, Tig Notaro, Raúl Castillo, Huma Qureshi, Samantha Win, Richard Cetrone, and Michael Cassidy.

ARMY OF THE DEAD takes place following a zombie outbreak that has left Las Vegas in ruins and walled off from the rest of the world. When Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), a displaced Vegas local, former zombie war hero who’s now flipping burgers on the outskirts of the town he now calls home, is approached by casino boss Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada), it’s with the ultimate proposition: Break into the zombie-infested quarantine zone to retrieve $200 million sitting in a vault beneath the strip before the city is nuked by the government in 32 hours.

For Matthias Schweighöfer, he has one of the best roles in the film. He plays safecracker Dieter, who gives the group the best chance of getting $200 million. A German director as well, Schweighöfer has done films such as Soloalbum, Off Beat, and What a Man and the Amazon television series You Are Wanted. He’s also slated to star in, direct, and produce Army of Thieves, a prequel film which sees Dieter as a small town bank teller recruited by a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals. The film also stars Nathalie Emmanuel.

For Hardwick, this is his first big role he’s done since he left Starz’s hit series Power, where he played the lead James “Ghost” St. Patrick. He also did an indie horror film called Spell opposite Loretta Devine. Early this year, he had a supporting role in Nate Parker’s American Skin.

BlackFilmandTV.com’s Wilson Morales spoke with Schweighöfer and Hardwick about their roles and working with Zack Snyder.
