NYFF 2023 Exclusive: Director Todd Haynes talks May December and working with Julianne Moore for over 20 years
Making its U.S. premiere at Alice Tully Hall as the opening night film at New York Film Festival was May December, directed by Todd Haynes and starring Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, Charles Melton, Cory Michael Smith, Elizabeth Yu, Gabriel Chung, Piper Curda, and D.W. Moffett. The film will hit Select Theaters November 17 before streaming on Netflix on Dec. 1.
Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a married couple buckles under the pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a film about their past.
Written by Samy Burch, from a story written by Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik, the producers include Natalie Portman, Sophie Mas, Pamela Koffler, Christine Vachon, Grant S. Johnson, Tyler W. Konney, Jessica Elbaum, and Will Ferrell.
For Haynes, this is his fourth film he’s directed Moore after 1995’s Safe, 2002’s Far From Heaven, 2007’s I’m Not There and 2017’s Wonderstruck. For his work on Far From Heaven, Haynes and Moore received Oscar nominations for Original Screenplay and Best Actress respectively.
