Judas and the Black Messiah, Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis and Andra Day land Oscar Nods - Full List
The 93rd Oscars were announced Monday morning. Husband and wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas announced the nominations in all 23 Oscar categories from a remote feed in London. In addition to the nominations, it was revealed that the April 25 Oscar ceremony will take place at both L.A.'s Union Station and the Dolby Theatre, the dual locations marking a first for the Academy. Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh are producing the telecast.
David Fincher's Mank led the pack with 10 nominations. As expected, there are some surprises and some historic noms. Nomadland's Chloe Zhao and Promising Young Woman’s Emerald Fennell became only the sixth and seventh women to compete in the directing category, with Zhao becoming the first woman of color.
Producers Charles D. King,, Ryan Coogler and Shaka King got a nomination for Best Picture for Judas and the Black Messiah. It’s the first time a BP nominee is an all-Black producing team.
Boseman, who died in August at the age of 43, was nominated for Best Actor and could become only the second posthumous winner after Network’s Peter Finch. (Heath Ledger won supporting actor posthumously for his portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight).
Both Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) and Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) were nominated for Best Actress, marking the first time in 48 years that two Black women have been in the Best Actress category in the same year since Diana Ross and Cicely Tyson were nominated in 1973. Ironically, both Day and Ross were nominated for playing Billie Holiday.
Surprisingly, Lakeith Stanfield was nominated for Best Supporting Actor along with his co-star Daniel Kaluuya for Judas and the Black Messiah. It was assumed that the studio (Warner Bros.) was campaigning him for Best Actor.
Another surprise was the omission of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and One Night In Miami in the Best Picture race. In a year, where there were plenty of qualified Black films, including Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, only eight films were nominated instead of 10. Judas was the lone Black film to make the cut.
