Dances with Films Festival 2022: Adam Pertofsky’s Ubuntu To Have World Premiere June 13

Among the selections making its World Premiere in the Documentary Competition at the 2022 Dances with Films Festival is Ubuntu, directed and executive produced by Adam Pertofsky. Written by Loren Levin, the film will play Monday, June 13 at 7:00 PM at TCL Chinese 6 Theatres Los Angeles (Theatre 6). Q&A with director Adam Pertofsky immediately following film.

UBUNTU shines a light on the Mamas of Cape Town, a group of heroic women whose tenacity allowed them to survive and even triumph over the cruel hand they were dealt, but whose inspiring struggle took place outside the spotlight of history. They raised generations of children from their communities while living under the oppression of Apartheid South Africa. As institutionalized racism enshrined as the law of the land, Black women were left without any access to power, opportunity, or protection. These Mamas endured the harsh realities of intense deprivation, severe poverty, and ubiquitous suffering on a daily basis…Ubuntu is their story.

Despite these hardships, the Mamas' tenacity allowed them to survive and even triumph over the cruel hand they were dealt. Together against the odds and all through Apartheid (1948 - 1994), they transformed their communities and became the backbone upon which South Africa was built. They took in children to educate them, feed them, and care for them as if they were their own, as well as helped the disabled in their communities.

In his feature documentary film debut, Academy Award© and Emmy-nominated director Adam Pertofsky (The Witness From the Balcony of Room 306) traveled to Cape Town, South Africa in the summer of 2018 to interview these inspiring women and capture their timeless stories of resilience and love that strike at the heart of our own humanity.

Loren Levin and Eve Kornblum also serve as executive producers. The film is produced by Leslie Owen and Loren Levin, director of photography is Eugenio Galli and editor is Chris Mitchell. Original music for the film is composed by Amanda Yamate.
