Among the films headed to the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (Sept. 5-15) is the film adaptation of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson, which will make its international premiere there.
It's a family affair for producer Denzel Washington as the film is directed by his son Malcolm Washington, stars his other son John David Washington, features his daughter Olivia Washington and is executive produced by his other daughter Katia Washington.
Along with John David and Olivia, the cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Danielle Deadwyler, Corey Hawkins, Michael Potts, Ray Fisher, Gail Bean, Erykah Badu, Stephan James, Melanie Jeffcoat, Malik J. Ali, Jay Peterson and Matrell Smith.
Set in 1936 Pittsburgh during the aftermath of the Great Depression, The Piano Lesson follows the lives of the Charles family in the Doaker Charles household and an heirloom, the family piano, which is decorated with designs carved by an enslaved ancestor.
Malcolm, in his feature directorial debut, co-wrote the script with Mudbound‘s Virgil Williams. Denzel Washington and Todd Black are producing, with Constanza Romero, Jennifer Roth and Katia Washington serving as exec producers.
