Gerard Butler’s Disaster Film ‘Greenland’ Release Date Pushed Back To 4th Quarter
STXFilms has pushed back the U.S release date of Gerard Butler’s latest film Greenland from September 25 to sometime in the fourth quarter. With theaters not open yet in major markets such as New York and Los Angeles, a lot of studios have been moving their films to later dates. Universal recently moved MGM’s Candyman to 2021 TBD off its Oct. 16 date following Warner’s big move to push Wonder Woman 1984 from Oct. 2 to Christmas Day last Friday.
Greenland has opened #1 in 13 markets overseas and has generated approximately $12.5 million internationally to date.
The pic directed by Ric Roman Waugh and written by Chris Sparling was previously scheduled for June 12 prior to the COVID-19 exhibition shutdown. The film stars Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, Roger Dale Ford, Theodore Scott Glenn, David Denman, Hope Davis, Andrew Bachelor, and Joshua Mikel.
Greenland revolves around a family who must fight for survival as a planet-killing comet races to Earth. Butler plays John Garrity and Morena Baccarin his estranged wife Allison. Together with their young son Nathan, they must make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary. Amid terrifying news accounts of cities around the world being leveled by the comet’s fragments, the Garritys experience the best and worst in humanity while they battle the increasing panic and lawlessness surrounding them. As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.
Greenland is produced by Thunder Road Films’ Basil Iwanyk (Sicario, John Wick), who also developed the project, with Butler and Alan Siegel via their G-BASE production company. Anton is fully financing and producing.
