During a panel discussion at the 2021 Tribeca Festival, in which BlackFilmandTV.com attended, Get Lifted producer Mike Jackson revealed to his producing partner, singer-songwriter John Legend that they will be working on the Bernie Mac biopic with the blessing from the Bernie Mac estate.

“We just partnered with Bernie Mac’s estate to cover Bernie Mac’s story,” Jackson told Legend and the audience.

Legend actually worked with Mac in director Malcolm D. Lee’s 2008’s Soul Men, which was Mac’s last film before he passed away weeks before the film’s release date at the age of 50.

“The Soul Men reunion you all wanted to see,” Legend said. In the 2008 film, Legend portrayed Marcus Hooks, the bandmember Louis Hinds (Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd Henderson (Mac) honor in a reunion concert after he dies.

“It’s about the opportunities to tell a story that you feel are important,” Jackson said.

Get Lifted is among the producers to Legend of the Underground, which is playing at the festival. They produced Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Jouney, With Drawn Arms, and 40 Years a Prisoners in 2020 and have A Crime on the Bayou coming out on June 18th.
