National Black Movie Association Celebrates 5th National Black Movie Day On Feb. 17
The National Black Movie Association (NBMA) today announced that National Black Movie Day will be observed on Saturday, February 17th, 2024. National Black Movie Day highlights the best in Black cinema and the general public is encouraged to show their support for this day-long celebration.
National Black Movie Day supporters can participate on Saturday, February 17th in three ways: by seeing a Black movie in a theater; streaming or renting a Black film at home; and by posting a video on their social media platform about a favorite Black film, filmmaker, actor or actress, or a favorite movie scene or treasured song. All social media posts should include the hashtag #nationalblackmovieday and the tag @nationalblackmovieday.
“We’re thrilled to be celebrating National Black Movie Day for a fifth year,” says Agnes Moss, founderofNMBA. “It’strulygratifyingtoknowthatpeopleacrossthecountrywill join us in celebrating the rich legacy of Black Cinematic excellence,” she adds.
On the eve of National Black Movie Day, Moss and members of NMBA will ring the bell at the New York Stock Exchange, an event she says will be especially meaningful. “It embodies the mission of this organization – to educate, elevate and fund the work of the next generation of Black filmmakers and media creatives.” Moss explains.
The National Black Movie Association was founded in 2019 by Moss, a DC native and HBCU graduate who hoped to pursue a film career, yet had her dream deferred when no film program was offered at her university due to a lack of funding. “I want every student filmmaker to have the resources to make filmmaking a viable career,” Moss states.
