A Short Break - Angela Tucker.jpg

This week on ‘a Short Break’ we watched the short documentary All Skinfolk Ain't Kinfolk by Director and Writer Angela Tucker. Tucker, who is originally from New York but has been in New Orleans for the past several years, was highly intrigued by the running of two Black women for New Orleans Mayor in 2018 and decided to capture the moment in a special way. If you missed the live interview, don’t worry as we captured a few highlights from the evening below!

Introducing a new virtual show a Short Break where host Damien D. Smith and co-host Emma J. show the best short films in its entirety and then replay with a live director’s cut where you, the audience are able to interact and ask questions to your favorite filmmakers! Tune in every Sunday at 4PM PT / 7PM ET to join in on the LIVE conversation via Facebook Live and YouTube Live.

Where did you get the money for your first short film?

Angela Tucker: I went to film school at Columbia, graduate school, so my student loans were how I got money! I got people to do things for free, secured equipment, and tried not to use too many loans!

What process did you go through to retrieve the licensing and rights for your archival footage?

Angela Tucker: It’s complicated. When this election was happening I pulled clips off of Youtube. I knew I needed the debates and it’s hard to get these clips later because the local news stations pull it after a certain period of time because they don’t have the bandwidth to keep it online forever. I grabbed all of it in real-time and then I hired an archivist to pull clips that I didn’t have.

We see that color grading was apart of your story and was done beautifully. How did you achieve this?

Angela Tucker: It was a challenging film to color grade because of the different kinds of footage. I had to decide on a look and all of it all consistent. We also had a lot of filters, we had a VCR filter and a film grainy filter to help tell the story.

What do you want people to take away from the short documentary?

Angela Tucker: I want in particular Black women to have conversations around voting but also to create spaces for Black women to have real conversations around the things that we want and investigate the politicians who can get us the things that we want. The presidential election is very important but there are a lot of smaller local elections that are also more important that affect your day to day life in a bigger way. I want people to think about those elections and to participate in them.
