Executive produced by award-winning filmmakers Dawn Porter (John Lewis: Good Trouble, Gideon’s Army) and Raney Aronson-Rath (Executive Producer, FRONTLINE), Ado Ato Pictures was responsible for leading both the interactive web experience and augmented reality installation, with Tamara Shogaolu directing both projects.

UN(RE)SOLVED is a multi-platform experience telling the story of and investigating more than 150 racially-motivated civil rights era murders. The installation will use augmented reality to bring to life stories of the victims of these racially-motivated murders whose cases were reopened under the Emmett Til Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act.

The web interactive will be included in Tribeca’s Best Creative Nonfiction competition.

In a statement, Ado Ato Pictures’ creative director, Tamara Shogaolu said:

“When designing this project, I was really inspired by the ability to design an experience that mixes art and technology with powerful investigative journalism to bring to life the stories of victims of racially-motivated murders.

I want to allow audiences to participate in the memorializing of these individuals who lost their lives tragically.

Often when we talk about the civil rights era, or racially motivated murders, there’s a misconception that it feels like it’s from another time. By using technology to bring it to the now and have it exist in a physical space is something that’s really powerful.

The way that I’ve designed the experience is audiences have to say the name of the person in order to be able to access their story and learn about their cases and hear from their next of kin. The augmented reality installation represents a living quilt that allows audiences to memorialize these victims’ lives while the web interactive allows audiences to delve deeper into some of the cases. By exploring the different chapters and the stories of these individuals through the installation and the web interactive, the audience member actually literally acts as a source of light during the experience.

With this experience, the idea is that all 150+ names are surrounding us.”
