Emmy Winners Announced As Zendaya Makes History
Tonight’s 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards came with some unexpected but great surprises in the latter half of the show. As expected Regina King won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for HBO’s Watchmen. This is her fourth Emmy overall. Her Watchmen co-star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. Another Watchmen winner was Cord Jefferson, who won Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series or Movie with Damon Lindelof.
The biggest surprise came in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category with the win going to 24 year-old Zendaya for HBO’s Euphoria. She became the youngest actress to win in that category and the second Black actress after Viola Davis (ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder).
Uzo Aduba was also a surprise winner in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie category. She won for her performance as Shirley Chisholm in the FX series Mrs. America.
