Watchmen Wins Big At 4th Annual Black Reel Awards for Television Awards
On August 7th, a “remix” of the original comic superhero film, Watchmen, was the evening’s big winner taking home five awards at the 4th Annual Black Reel Awards for Television Awards.
The HBO limited series created by Damon Lindelof won Outstanding TV Movie/Limited Series, as well as Outstanding Actress for Regina King, and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Yahya Abdul Mateen II. The show also swept both the directing and writing category winning Outstanding Directing, TV Movie/Limited Series for Stephen Williams (“The Extraordinary Being”) as well as Outstanding Writing, TV Movie/Limited Series for both Christal Henry and Lindelof (“If Wou Don’t Like My Story, Build Your Own”).
The evening’s other double-digit nominee, Insecure also had a solid night capturing three of its ten nominations. The critically-acclaimed comedy won Outstanding Comedy Series and also two of the ensemble cast, Issa Rae won Outstanding Actress, Comedy and her co-star Yvonne Orji captured Outstanding Supporting Actress, Comedy.
There were plenty of first-time winners including Eddie Murphy’s triumphant return to Saturday Night Live which won him Outstanding Guest Actor, Comedy Series. Murphy won his first Black Reel Award earlier this year for Dolemite Is My Name and now has scored his first BRAT award.
Pose also won a pair of awards, including a history-making honor for Janet Mock, who became the first woman to ever win Outstanding Directing, Drama (“In My Heels”) as well as winning Outstanding Drama Series.
Despite the cancellation earlier this week of Hulu’s High Fidelity, the show received a wonderful parting gift – an Outstanding Writing, Comedy Series win for an episode written by E.T. Feigenbaum & show’s lead, Zoe Kravitz.
