Miami Film Festival 2024 Red Carpet Interview - Tom Hiddleston on receiving the Variety Virtuoso Award

Last night at the 41st Miami Film Festival, actor Tom Hiddleston was presented with the Variety Virtuoso Award for his his career achievements across film, theater and television.

With the work that he’s done on stage and TV such the plays Cymbeline and Betrayal and Wood Allen’s Midnight in Paris, Jim Jarmusch's romantic vampire film Only Lovers Left Alive and the biopic I Saw The Light, where he played country singer Hank Williams, Hiddleston is best known for portraying Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), starting with Thor in 2011 and most recently headlining the Disney+ series Loki.

Among the questions asked at the red carpet by several journalists, there are some of the highlights.

You've also recently begun a huge milestone in your life, becoming a dad. What's the greatest lesson that you've learned from fatherhood?

Tom Hiddleston: Gosh, that's a big question. I don't know if I have the answer for you right now. Wow. Sorry, I didn't expect it. It's just changed everything. It's changed the center of my life. I'm happy to be here.

Welcome back to Miami. You are getting the Ritual Award from Variety. How does it feel and what's going through your mind right now?

Tom Hiddleston: It's honestly just the most profound honor to be here. I'm so grateful to Variety and the Miami Film Festival and Miami-Dade College for inviting me. It's a great delight, a great surprise and a great honor.

So, students wanted to know how have you overcome struggle in your life and how would you recommend they stay motivated?

Tom Hiddleston: I suppose they think the best advice I can give is to keep going. Somebody once said to me, if you're going to the 7th Circle of Hell, keep going. You'll get out the other side. Yes, put one foot in front of the other, one after another after another and one day you'll be out the other side. You'll look back and you've climbed a mountain.

There's a video of you singing Miami when you were here promoting Avengers, the Will Smith song, I don't know if you remember that.

Tom Hiddleston: That was back in the Jurassic Age. Yes. About 20 years ago. About 20 years ago. I'm sure you have a video back in Miami. I had a great time here then. It's got such an energy, this city. It's got such vibrancy and it's a great pleasure to be back. I haven't been here long, but it's been lovely to drive around the city and go for a walk and see the sights. Miami seems busier than ever.

You've done so many amazing things, from Broadway to your shows to the movies. I'm sure there's so many challenges and things that you've learned along the way. What is the one lesson that you've learned throughout this whole journey?

Tom Hiddleston: Gosh, that's a great question. What's the lesson? I think the lesson is to be true to oneself and do your best. If you do your best, you walk away from the field knowing that whether you won or lost, you did your best. By putting one foot in front of the other, slowly you build things. It's only when you look back you realize what you've done.
