Exclusive: Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr. & Tiffany Boone talk Mufasa: The Lion King
Hitting theaters on Dec. 20 from Walt Disney is Mufasa: The Lion King, directed by Oscar winner Barry Jenkins.
The voice cast includes Aaron Pierre as Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, along with Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, and John Kani as Rafiki. The film also has Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, Thandiwe Newton, Mads Mikkelsen, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, and also Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, and introducing Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, daughter of King Simba & Queen Nala.
The screenplay is written by Jeff Nathanson, the same writer as 2019's The Lion King movie. Based on Disney's The Lion King (1994), originally written by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, Linda Woolverton.
Walt Disney Pictures' Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny — their bonds will be tested as they must work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.
Harrison Jr. is best known for movies Waves, Luce, It Comes At Night, Monsters And Men, Joe Wright’s Cyrano and played B.B.King in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic, Elvis. He recently starred as Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges in Stephen Williams’ Chevalier and as Martin Luther King Jr. in Genius: MLK/X, which is Season 4 of Nat Geo’s Genius.
Pierre was most recently seen in Netflix’s Rebel Ridge. He also played Malcolm X opposite Kelvin Harrison Jr.’s Martin Luther King in Genius: MLK/X, which is Season 4 of Nat Geo’s Genius. Previous TV and film credits include Syfy’s Krypton, Amazon series Britannia, The Underground Railroad. M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, Clement Virgo’s Brother, Garth Davis’ Foe.
Boone is best known for her roles as Jerrika in Showtime’s The Chi, Roxy Jones in Hunters, Mandy Lang in the second season of the FOX TV series The Following and for her supporting roles as Savannah Snow and Mimi in the fantasy film Beautiful Creatures and the horror-comedy film Detention, respectively. She also appeared in Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere and Nine Perfect Strangers.
