Exclusive: Blair Underwood on the success of his new film Longlegs with Nicolas Cage
Currently in theaters from Neon in the horror film Longlegs, directed by Oz Perkins and starring Maika Monroe as Lee Harker, Nicolas Cage, Alicia Witt, Blair Underwood, and Dakota Daulby.
The film had the best original horror opening year-to-date and the best-ever start for its distribution company Neon with $22.6M. For Underwood, this is his biggest film he’s had since he had a starring role in Tyler Perry’s Madea's Family Reunion back in 2006. That film opened at #1 with $30M off a production budget of $6M.
Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), a talented new FBI agent, has been assigned to an unsolved case of a serial killer. As the investigation becomes more complicated and occult evidence is uncovered, Harker realizes a personal link to the ruthless killer and must act quickly to prevent another family murder. Underwood plays Harker’s boss Carter.
Blair, a Golden Globe and Tony Award nominee, was last seen in Ava DuVernay’s Neon feature Origin, after collaborating with the filmmaker on her Emmy-winning limited series, When They See Us, for Netflix. His previous TV and film credits include Really Love, Bad Hair, Self Made, Dear White People (the series), Quantico, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day, I Will Follow, and In Treatment.
Other upcoming projects for the actor include the series Three Women opposite DeWanda Wise and Smothered from Starz and Sky, respectively. He also recently directed, produced and starred in the indie psychological thriller Viral, which co-stars Sarah Silverman.
