Exclusive: Chosen Jacobs talks Sneakerella, being a sneakerhead and working with Lexi Underwood

Now playing on Disney+ is the charming musical film, Sneakerella, directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum and starring Chosen Jacobs, Lexi Underwood, Devyn Nekoda, Juan Chioran, Kolton Stewart, Hayward Leach, Bryan Terrell Clark, and John Salley. This trend-setting pop/hip-hop musical began streaming May 13 on Disney+ and puts a contemporary twist on the “Cinderella” fairy tale.

“Sneakerella” is set in the vibrant street-sneaker subculture of New York City. It introduces El (Jacobs), an aspiring sneaker designer from Queens who works as a stock boy in the shoe store that once belonged to his late mother.

El hides his artistic talent from his overburdened stepfather and two mean-spirited stepbrothers who constantly stomp on any opportunity that comes his way. When El meets Kira King (Underwood), the fiercely independent daughter of legendary basketball star and sneaker tycoon Darius King (Salley), sparks fly as the two bond over their mutual affinity for sneakers. With a little nudge from his best friend and a sprinkle of Fairy Godfather magic, El finds the courage to use his talent to pursue his dream of becoming a ‘legit’ sneaker designer in the industry.

For Jacobs, this is his second lead role after starring in Quibi’s When The Streetlights Go On. He is also best known for his recurring role as Will Grover on the CBS television series Hawaii Five-0 and his role as Mike Hanlon in the 2017 film adaptation of the Stephen King novel It, and its follow-up It Chapter Two.
