Exclusive: Director Sam Raimi & Screenwriter Michael Waldron Talk Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Hitting theaters on opens in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2022 from Marvel Studios is “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”—a thrilling ride through the Multiverse with Doctor Strange, his trusted friend Wong and Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch.

Directed by Sam Raimi from a script by Michael Waldron, the film is produced by Kevin Feige.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, and Xochitl Gomez.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as he reprises his role as Dr. Stephen Strange. This time the Sorcerer Supreme will be joined by Wanda Maximoff/ Scarlett Witch, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen who is coming off from the critical success of WandaVision. The sequel is expected to tie into the events from WandaVisionLoki and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The sequel will also feature MCU alums Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, and Rachel McAdams, who are reprising their roles as Karl Mordo, Wong, and Dr. Christine Palmer, respectively. It will also feature the introduction of the live-action debut of fan-favorite Marvel hero America Chavez., who will be portrayed by newcomer Xochitl Gomez.

For Sam Raimi, this is the 3rd film he’s directed since he helmed Spider-Man 3 back in 2007. Way before the MCU started, Raimi was responsible for the biggest Marvel films at the time with the three Spider-Man films he had directed. His previous films with the cult favorites Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness with his longtime lead Bruce Campbell, The Quick and the Dead, For Love of the Game, and 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful. While not directing, Raimi’s been producing horror films such as the remakes of Evil Dead and Poitergeist, and Don’t Breathe 1 & 2.

As the writer for the Loki series that aired on Disney+, Waldron is already in the MCU but the challenge to create a story for Dr. Strange, having appeared in four previous Marvel films after 2016’s Doctor Strange, was not an easy feat. Stephen Strange has grown more confident with his skills over the films and Waldron has to incorporate that in this story as well as add in other characters from previous films and new characters rumored to be in the film.

Blackfilmandtv.com’s Wilson Morales spoke with Raimi and Waldron on returning to the director’s chair and for Waldron bringing in new characters while keeping Strange the focus point.
