Exclusive: Emmy nominated Costume Designer Dominique Dawson talks about Prime Video's Swarm
Among the numerous Black talent receiving 2023 Emmy nominations was costume designer Dominique Dawson for her work on Prime Video’s Swarm, co-created and executive produced by Janine Nabers and Donald Glover
Set between 2016-2018, the series follows Dre, played by Dominique Fishback, and her obsessive nature towards a high-profile popstar. It sets her off on an unexpected cross-country journey. The cast also includes Chlöe Bailey as Dre’s sister, Marissa and Damson Idris as Marissa’s boyfriend, Khalid. Additional guest stars include Rickey Thompson, Paris Jackson, Rory Culkin, Kiersey Clemons, and Byron Bowers, with Malia Obama making her writing debut on the show’s fifth episode.
Dominique, along with Brittny Chapman and Marshal Khan, are nominated for Outstanding Contemporary Costumes For A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie, for Swarm’s episode 2, Honey.
Dominique has had an expansive career within the creative space; bringing her talent to projects ranging from costume-designing the Gabrielle Union/ Jessica Alba series LA’s Finest, Roberto Patino's DMZ starring Rosario Dawson, to costume designing Ava Duvernay and Colin Kaepernick’s Colin In Black & White. Audiences and fans alike can look forward to more of Dominique’s work and talent, set to be seen in Ava Duvernay’s Origin, highly anticipated film adaptation of the novel series, Caste.
