Tribeca Fest 2023 Exclusive: Oscar Winning filmmakers Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe talk BS High documentary

Hitting HBO on August 23 is the extraordinary documentary BS High, directed by Oscar winners Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe.

On August 29, 2021, the Bishop Sycamore Centurions, a presumed high school football team from Columbus, Ohio, took on perennial prep powerhouse, IMG Academy. The game was nationally televised on ESPN and the Centurions lost 58-0. The blowout caused fans and audiences to question the legitimacy of the Bishop Sycamore program and the activities of now-fired head coach Roy Johnson. However, the final score and a fired head coach turned out to be just the beginning of the story

Martin Desmond Roe and Travon Free are an Academy Award and five-time Emmy Award winning directing duo best known for their Oscar winning short, TWO DISTANT STRANGERS. Their most recent documentary, BS HIGH for HBO recently premiered at the Tribeca Festival in June 2023. They are currently writing and adapting S.A. Cosby’s novel RAZORBLADE TEARS for Bruckheimer Films and Paramount.

Travon is one of the most sought after young, comedic voices on social, political and pop culture issues, whose work can be found all over television, print outlets, and the internet. His writing and directing credits include Showtime’s BLACK MONDAY, HBO’s CAMPING and WINNING TIME, THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART, and SINGLE DRUNK FEMALE. He was the co-head writer on FULL FRONTAL WITH SAMANTHA BEE.

Martin is a prolific documentary and commercial director whose work ranges from Docu-Shows like Netflix’s WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS and HEIST, to longform features like the Cannes Lion winning, BREAKING2 for National Geographic. In commercials, his work earned him a spot in ADWEEK’S 40 under 40 and almost every award in the space. Additionally, Martin has worked as an Executive Producer in the doc space with over a dozen shows including Facebook’s TOM VS TIME and KOBE BRYANT’S MUSE for Showtime.
