Exclusive: Producer/ Director Huriyyah Muhammad talks Short film Chocolate with Sprinkles

Currently playing the festival circuit is the short film, Chocolate with Sprinkles, written and directed by Huriyyah Muhammad. The cast of the short includes Reno Wilson, Keisha Thompson, Camron Jones, Lillian Gilbert, and Nate Allen Smith.

On their 25th wedding anniversary, a bickering couple is given one day to do something they haven’t done in 25 years – work on their marriage.

Fresh off its win in the HBO Short Film Competition at the American Black Film Festival, CHOCOLATE WITH SPRINKLES tells the captivating story of a bickering married couple who, on their 25th wedding anniversary, are given a chance to do something they haven’t done in 25 years—work on their marriage. Starring Reno Wilson, Keisha Thompson, Camron Jones, Lillian Gilbert, and Nate Allen Smith, the film brings to life a family navigating the challenges of marriage, running a business, and raising children, all against the backdrop of their cherished donut shop.

Adding to the film's growing list of accolades, Huriyyah Muhammad will be awarded The Trailblazer Award by The Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film and Lecture Series at the iconic Riverside Theater in New York City this October. As part of the ceremony, there will be a special screening of CHOCOLATE WITH SPRINKLES, further highlighting its impact and connection with audiences.

Across the country, the film's success has been marked by a string of achievements and selections at top festivals nationwide, including the Micheaux Film Festival, where it will be showcased at the Culver Theater from October 21-27, 2024. Now in its sixth year, the Micheaux Film Festival has become known as a premier platform for diverse voices in the film industry, and the inclusion of CHOCOLATE WITH SPRINKLES underscores the film's significance.

Huriyyah is an award-winning writer, director and producer whose projects have been invited to the Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, Austin Film Festival, New Voices in Black Cinema, American Black Film Festival and many others. She is a 2018 Sundance Creative Producing Fellow and recipient of the 2020 Sundance Creative Producing Award for Farewell Amor, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival in US Dramatic Competition.

Huriyyah is also co-founder of the Black TV & Film Collective, a 1400-member 501c3 dedicated to developing and supporting artists of color. At the Collective, Huriyyah wears many hats, most of which can be summarized as leading this awesome team and being inspired every day by our members.
