Exclusive: Teyana Taylor and director A.V. Rockwell talk A Thousand and One

Hitting theaters on March 31 from Focus Features is the Sundance Award winning film, A Thousand and One, directed by A.V. Rockwell and starring Teyana Taylor. The film was produced by Focus Features in partnership with Sight Unseen, Makeready and Hillman Grad Productions.

The film was the Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at 2023 The Sundance Film Festival.

Written and directed by A.V. Rockwell in her feature-length directorial debut, the film follows unapologetic and free-spirited Inez (Teyana Taylor), who kidnaps six-year-old Terry from the foster care system. Holding onto their secret and each other, mother and son set out to reclaim their sense of home, identity, and stability, in a rapidly changing New York City.

The cast also includes Josiah Cross, Will Catlett, Aaron Kingsley Adetole, Aven Courtney, Terri Victoria, Abney Delissa Reynolds, Amelia Workman, and Adriane Lenox.

Most recently seen in the Amazon Prime Video film Coming 2 America with Eddie Murphy, singer-actress Teyana Taylor’s film credits also include Stomp the Yard: Homecoming, Madea's Big Happy Family, Brotherly Love, and Honey: Rise Up and Dance. Upcoming films include the remake to White Men Can't Jump and Jeymes Samuel’s The Book of Clarence.

Alina Victoria (A.V.for short) Rockwell is an award-winning screenwriter and director from Queens, New York who was handpicked to direct “The Gospel,” a music-driven short film commissioned by singer/songwriter Alicia Keys. Her previous short films included “The Dreamer,” “Open City: Kids,” “B.L.B (Bad Little Boy),” and “Feathers.” The NYU Tisch School of the Arts alum was also the winner of the 2016 Tribeca CHANEL Through Her Lens women filmmakers fellowship.
