Exclusive: The Marvels interviews with Nia DaCosta (Director), Laura Karpman (Composer), & Mary Livanos (EP)

Hitting theaters on Nov. 10 is the latest film from Marvel Studios The Marvels, directed by Nia DCosta and starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Seo-Jun Park, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson.

In Marvel Studios’ “The Marvels,” Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as “The Marvels.”

Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. Laura Karp is the composer. The screenplay is by Nia DaCosta and Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik.

For DaCosta, she becomes the first Black woman to direct a Marvel film. She previously wrote and directed the crime thriller film Little Woods (2018), winning the Nora Ephron Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival. She then followed that film with the horror film Candyman (2021), which starred Teyonah Parris and Colman Domingo. She is currently in production on an adaptation of Hedda Gabler.

Composer Karp recently worked on the Marvel & Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, which stars Iman Vellani. Her previous work on television projects have included AMC’s 61st Street, Netflix’s From Scratch, What If…? from Disney+, HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Spectrum’s L.A.'s Finest, and WGN’s Underground. She’s the composer for the upcoming film, American Fiction, directed by Cord Jefferson.

Mary Livanos is an executive producer on The Marvels. Previously, she was a co-executive producer on WandaVision and a co-producer on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. She was also the manager of production and development on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the production and development executive on Captain Marvel.
