Deadline is reporting that Mutiny Pictures has secured North American distribution rights to indie drama Equal Standard, which will get a limited theatrical release May 7 followed by a VOD and DVD bow in July.

The film stars Tobias Truvillion, Ice-T, Robert Clohessy, Maurice Benard, Fredro Starr, Anthony ‘Treach’ Criss, Chris Kerson, Byron Clohessy, Syleena Johnson, Hassan Johnson, Audrey Labarthe, Brad Fleischer, James Doherty, Taheim Bryan, Myles Clohessy and La Rivers.

Brendan Kyle Cochrane directed the film, which tells poignant, timely and politically charged stories of police in New York City struggling with race, rank, betrayal and loss. The film is inspired by the personal life experience of Taheim Bryan, who wrote the screenplay and will make his acting debut. Bryan and Ice-T also produced the film with Treach and Rob Simmons.

Equal Standard centers on the tragic circumstances that arise in New York City after an officer of the NYPD shoots an unarmed black man. The drama unfolds after officers accost Chris Jones (Truvillion), a black off-duty police officer they mistake for a thug, prompting him to shoot his gun in self-defense. Benard appears as Captain Chavat Isaak, who must deal with the chaotic aftermath of the tense situation.
