Exclusive: Lexi Underwood talks Sneakerella & Coming Back To Musicals

Now playing on Disney+ is the charming musical film, Sneakerella, directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum and starring Chosen Jacobs, Lexi Underwood, Devyn Nekoda, Juan Chioran, Kolton Stewart, Hayward Leach, Bryan Terrell Clark, and John Salley. This trend-setting pop/hip-hop musical begins streaming May 13 on Disney+ and puts a contemporary twist on the “Cinderella” fairy tale.

“Sneakerella” is set in the vibrant street-sneaker subculture of New York City. It introduces El (Jacobs), an aspiring sneaker designer from Queens who works as a stock boy in the shoe store that once belonged to his late mother. El hides his artistic talent from his overburdened stepfather and two mean-spirited stepbrothers who constantly stomp on any opportunity that comes his way. When El meets Kira King (Underwood), the fiercely independent daughter of legendary basketball star and sneaker tycoon Darius King (Salley), sparks fly as the two bond over their mutual affinity for sneakers. With a little nudge from his best friend and a sprinkle of Fairy Godfather magic, El finds the courage to use his talent to pursue his dream of becoming a ‘legit’ sneaker designer in the industry.

Underwood is best known for her breakout role in Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere, opposite Kerry Washington. She currently plays Malia Obama alongside Viola Davis in the Showtime series The First Lady and will next be seen in Season 2 cast Freeform’s Cruel Summer, replacing Eloise Payet in the character of Isabella. For this film, Underwood gets to return to the land of musicals as she once played Young Nala in the Disney Theatrical Productions of The Lion King.

Blackfilmandtv.com’s Wilson Morales caught with Underwood as she spoke about her character, coming back to the musical genre and being a sneakerhead.
