Hitting Netflix on July 21 is the satirical conspiracy caper film They Cloned Tyrone, starring Golden Globe winner John Boyega (Small Axe, Attack the Block, Star Wars), Teyonah Parris (The Marvels, WandaVision) and Oscar winner Jamie Foxx.
They Cloned Tyrone is the directorial debut of Juel Taylor, the writer behind Creed II, and is co-written by Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier. In June, the film was the opening night selection for the 2023 American Black Film Festival (ABFF.
The film follows a series of eerie events that thrusts an unlikely trio (Boyega, Parris, and Foxx) onto the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy in this pulpy mystery caper. They Cloned Tyrone had a limited theatrical release prior to launching on Netflix July 21, 2023.
A pulpy, sci-fi mystery caper in which an unlikely trio (John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx) investigates a series of eerie events, alerting them to a nefarious conspiracy lurking directly beneath their hood. Boyega's Fontaine, a neighborhood drug dealer, is shot dead by rival Isaac and then is very shocked to wake up in his bed the next morning unharmed. He and Foxx's Slick Charles and Parris' Yo-Yo begin looking into the incident, and their search eventually leads them to a vast underground complex where a government – backed lab is performing experiments on the local Black population. Realizing that he is an artificial clone controlled by Nixon, Fontaine initially feels despair, but decides he needs to stand up to these white institutional overlords for the sake of his neighborhood.
The cast also features J. Alphonse Nicholson, David Alan Grier, Joshua Mikel, and Tamberla Perry.
The film is produced by Charles D. King, Stephen “Dr.” Love, Tony Rettenmaier, Juel Taylor, Jamie Foxx, and Datari Turner. The film is executive produced by Mark R. Wright, Kim Roth, Jack Murray, Federal Films, Dana Sano, Monte Lipman and co-executive produced by James Lopez and Poppy Hanks.
